Irish Music on Harmonica

A thought struck me one day, "I wonder if you can play Irish music on the harmonica?" So I Googled "Irish Harmonica" and found this video at the top of the heap.

After watching this I was intrigued and wanted to find out more about who this Brendan Power guy was and listen to more of his music. So I watched this second video of him playing a set of three Irish songs with a great percussionist named Lucy Randall.

After figuring out that Irish music was called "reels" I searched for "Irish Reels Harmonica" and found this video by Joel Andersson. This video hooked me. I watched it so many times I lost count. I even played it over and over on my iPhone while on my way to work.

The thing that intrigued me most about this video, other than Joel Andersson's amazing playing, was that one of the harmonicas he is playing is a Honer Marine Band in the key of D, tuned to Paddy Richter Tuning. I had just bought a few Honer harmonicas, a Marine Band, Big River and Blues Harp, and was trying to learn how to play blues harmonica. This video showed me that I didn't need to buy an expensive chromatic harmonica to start learning to play Irish music on the harmonica. I just needed to tune my harmonicas to Paddy Richter Tuning.
